WHAT COURSES ARE REQUIRED FOR A MAJOR?
To get a close-up view of a major, take a look at the courses that must be taken to get that degree. College websites list the majors they offer. If you click on a major, you should be able to find the courses that must be taken each year. Look through the courses with your child and gauge your child’s reaction to the upper level (junior and senior year) courses. Determine if the courses are interesting or a turn-off.
WIDEN THE RESEARCH
Check out the same major but at different college websites and note the differences and similarities. Getting a wide sampling of courses will give you a better idea of what that major involves. It also will give you some idea how the major can be different at one school than another. English at one college might be taught with a different angle or with different methods than at another.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
As parents, coaches, and counselors, we can help our children find options that will match their interests. Take some time and look through the coursework for various majors with your child. The exercise might be a defining moment in his life.
Musing: a period of reflection or thought. As such this post reflects my thoughts, opinions, and experiences on the topic. The choice to home school and the methods you choose are yours to determine.
