My wonderful husband of 34 years and I have been home schooling our three children for 13 years. We’ve covered all the years from kindergarten to high school graduation. My husband has an MBA and works as a financial advisor. I surrendered my career as a pharmacist to care for our children. My medical training has been put to use teaching high school science classes in the community. We value academics, creativity, personal development, and our Christian faith. All three of our children homeschooled through high school. Our oldest attended college tuition-free and is now working on a PhD at UNC Chapel Hill. Our middle child is attending a four-year college tuition-free, while our 12th grader just got accepted into mechanical engineering at NC State University. The biggest lesson we learned while home schooling is that there are alternative pathways to academic and personal success besides the traditional school. We chose to use CLEP exams to earn college credit in the early high school years and then community college credits in the later years. I am thankful for the moms who shared their ideas, support, and friendship over the years. I could not have done it without them. The purpose of this blog is to share experiences and thoughts we gathered along the way. Perhaps one of our experiences will provide encouragement to a homeschooling family or even inspire a family to give homeschooling a try.
