Freedom of choice. The benefits of homeschool were not evident until we homeschooled. An important benefit has been the ability to make choices. Choice, after all, is an American value. Structuring an educational pathway is an exercise in choice.

Thankfully the state of North Carolina allows parents freedom of choice in structuring an educational pathway. Other states are more restrictive. In the more homeschool-friendly states, parents are loosely bound, perhaps, by the college admission requirements or the future possibility of entering a traditional school should that become necessary.

We have been able to choose:

  • Curricula
  • Courses
  • Workload
  • Length of day
  • Pace

By reducing formal learning hours our kids have extra time to:

  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Develop skills
  • Work on interests
  • Maintain a small business
  • Work a job
  • Socialize
  • Travel
  • Read
  • Exercise
  • Play

Running towards a goal. Homeschool has allowed us to avoid the common negative issues at school: peer pressure, bullying, drugs, and values contrary to our own. Homeschoolers often get criticized for running away from the world and living in a bubble. Personally, I like to say we are running to something we want. We are running to the values we respect and cherish. Our children only have so many years to develop into the kind of adults we desire them to be. Time spent in one place is time not spent in another. We don’t get a do-over.

I am not an expert in education. This post is to offer ideas and inspiration for families who are searching for educational alternatives. If you are confused or overwhelmed about your current education situation, take it to God. You are not alone. Pray for guidance and wisdom for your next step. God has a plan for each of us if we simply ask and trust in Him. The plan may seem unorthodox, but when God is backing it, you will be at peace.

Musing: a period of reflection or thought. As such this post reflects my thoughts, opinions, and experiences on the topic. The choice to home school and the methods you choose are yours to determine.
