Changed hearts. My husband and I were not originally sold on the home school movement. In fact we were downright scornful of it. What changed our hearts was the epiphany that parents in our state of North Carolina have the freedom to choose curricula. Complementing that advantage was a remarkable selection of quality homeschool curricula. We trusted that the courses at our children’s elementary school were adequate, but when we saw the exciting alternative resources, we were eager to learn about educating at home.
Our goals for our children. As parents, we wanted our children to have delightful and meaningful childhoods. And that included their education too. My husband and I remember a dull and grinding public school experience. We wanted something different for our kids. The question that needed to be answered was, can home school courses produce both academic challenge and interesting learning?
Discovering curricula that met our goals. It took six months to explore and understand the wide variety of options. Our research led us to conclude that, yes, the available home school curricula could provide academic challenge and interesting learning. At that point we decided to leave the familiar, comfortable route and embark on an off-road expedition into the unknown. That is how we fell into the wonderful, unregrettable journey that continues to this day.
Musing: a period of reflection or thought. As such this post reflects my thoughts, opinions, and experiences on the topic. The choice to home school and the methods you choose are yours to determine.
Most people who enter home school have questions. This is especially true if you are transitioning from the public or private realm. I invite you to take some time to read and absorb the information presented in this blog. I am grateful for the wisdom of the author who has personally encouraged us from 3rd grade to the completion of college level work. To the new homeschooling family, please know you have multiple good choices at your disposal.
