WHAT’S ON IT

The Principles of Management exam covers material that is usually taught in an introductory course in the essentials of management and organization. Questions on the exam require you to demonstrate knowledge of management functions and techniques, and ability to associate the meaning of specific terminology with important management ideas, processes, and techniques.

NUMBER OF CREDITS

A passing score on this exam can provide 3 college credits. It can provide 1 high school credit (1 year). See Locating College CLEP Lists and College CLEP Policies to help you learn about the CLEP credits that your target college may accept. See CLEP on the High School Transcript for ideas on how to record these credits.

DIFFICULTY RATING

This exam along with Principles of Marketing are ranked the easiest of all CLEP exams. It is rated as a 1 out of 5 with 5 being the most difficult on websites that attempt to rank the exams. See CLEP Difficulty Ranking for our experiences as middle and high school test takers.

WHEN TO TAKE IT

Since this exam is easier than most, a student can take it anytime in high school. It makes sense to take it after taking Introductory Psychology CLEP because of shared concepts. But it is not necessary to take the psychology exam first. It’s a good exam to cram in right before going to college. At this point, a student will know if the credit will be accepted. It can be a quick summer project. See Which CLEP When: How We Tracked from Middle School to Graduation.

STUDY PLAN

This exam can be prepared for in 2 – 6 weeks depending on how much time you are willing to commit each day. My daughter studied about four hours a day for two weeks. Please note that she had already passed the Psychology CLEP. See CLEP Study Plans.

RESOURCES

InstantCert was the study material of choice. My daughter researched the facts found within the questions and wrote down additional facts on pages to study. To determine test readiness, she took the practice test in CLEP Official Study Guide available at the public library. See my post on Determining CLEP Exam Readiness.

FINAL PREPARATION See CLEP Prep Boot Camp: The Final Weeks.

WHAT THIS EXAM PAIRS WITH

The Principles of Management CLEP shares concepts with the Introductory Psychology CLEP and the Introductory Sociology CLEP. This exam is one of five easier exams that overlap. Read 15 Credit CLEP Package.

USING THESE CREDITS AT COLLEGE

These credits were accepted at our community college. They may or may not be accepted at all four-year colleges. If your state has an articulation agreement like North Carolina does, earning an associate’s degree at a community college allows CLEP credits normally not accepted by a four-year state school to transfer.

Read CLEP Credits and NC’s Articulation Agreement.

PLACING A CREDIT ON THE HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT

After studying for and taking this CLEP exam, a student can confidently place one credit on the high school transcript. It can serve as a business elective. The material could complement any entrepreneurial endeavor your student is taking on. A credit this easy to prepare for can serve as an emergency credit on the high school transcript. It can increase the number of credits and allow for an early graduation, or it make up for a loss.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

The Principles of Management CLEP does not take much time to prepare for. It’s a great way to tally up credits for a college that accepts a lot of CLEP credits such as a community college or an online adult education type of program. For a student choosing a business degree, it’s probably best to take a live management class to build a strong base. My son-in-law used this exam to increase his rank in the Air Force. These credits are a super easy way to convince a homeschool hater that homeschool has virtue. Just don’t tell the skeptic how easy these credits were to get!

My experience with CLEP testing. I have coached my kids and their friends through 16 different CLEP exams over a period of 9 years. Collectively, they have passed 39 CLEP exams and earned over 159 college credits. I’m still coaching my younger son through his CLEP journey. My high school graduates have received full-ride merit scholarships.

Musing: a period of reflection or thought. As such this post reflects my thoughts, opinions, and experiences on the topic. The choice to home school and the methods you choose are yours to determine.
